Hera is a proactive community of artists who
are passionate about bringing fine art to South County and the larger
community. Hera Gallery promotes a professional artistic presence for
emerging and established artists who are dedicated to their creative practice.
In addition to a full schedule of exhibitions, Hera strives to engage
the public through programming such as lectures, talks, film and video
screenings, performance and spoken word. Established in 1974, Hera Gallery
is a non-profit artist-run arts organization that has continued to stimulate
discussion and challenge perceptions for over 36 years. |
Dear Friend of the Hera Gallery,
Since we returned to the Gallery on Main Street in June of 2010 Hera has, with your help, presented a full schedule of exhibitions and alternative programming, including poetry readings, film and video screenings, and community engagement. We have also continued our support of student artists though exhibition opportunities and the mentoring of URI interns. We could not have done this without your continued support.
We are now faced with a similar dilemma as the one we faced in 2009 when the property was sold with the intention to be completely renovated. We moved out and spent 18 months at Lily Pads while we programmed for other spaces such as Bagelz, The Mobile Art Project and the Courthouse Center for the Arts. When the renovation project failed, the owners of Phil’s Restaurant, Ken and Carl Tetzner bought the property.
The Tetzner’s are now proceeding with their long-range plans for the property and are intent on bringing in more revenue from both the Hera Gallery building and the former Kiddie Kloset. The landlords have raised our rent to an amount we cannot afford. Once again, Hera is looking for a new space as the Tetzners are in discussion with a prospective tenant.
We are excited to have received a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts that will help us fund the 25th Children’s Art Exhibition as well as an upcoming invitational exhibition, Technocraft, curated by local artists and focus on the relationship between craft and technology.
Your generous donation at this time will provide the much-needed assistance to Hera Gallery as we face this new challenging period of transition. Your generosity will support the gallery’s continued presence in the community and our relocation to a new exhibition space; but will also ensure a full calendar of stimulating programming for 2012.
Hera Gallery truly values your support and encouragement; so it is important for Hera to share this news with you before you read about this situation in the newspaper. Lastly, we would like to thank you for your dedication to Hera, and hope that you will continue to contribute to the arts via a donation to the gallery.
Sincerely,
Islay Taylor, Director I Alexandra Broches, President
