Artist’s Statement
As an artist, intuition generally trumps any theme, subject, or specific concept with which I might begin. However, I do have themes that persistently reappear in my work: images originating from childhood memories and family stories that often evolve into emotionally-toned “place” paintings; Ancient looking sites full of textural layers suggesting continuity across time and space; inner journeys, which, as paintings, evolve into abstraction; figures, in their placement telling of family relationship and estrangement; dream imagery, where, as symbols, image placement is significant; and flowers, abstracted and speaking of perceived qualities of a specific time and place. At my best, my process is about searching and discovery, rather than about what I already know.
