Artist Statement- Elizabeth Lind

I am inspired by the natural world within my reach, especially sea forms and the human figure. I like to speak through the language of symbols- some personal, some widely accepted culturally. I avoid trends, and admit I am not involved in what is going on in the art world. My art making is a cocoon in which to connect to that which is most meaningful to me at any moment in time. I have no works that deal with political issues, historical events, or social comment. Most works deal with bonds between people, such as love, death, joy, betrayal, fertility, motherhood, and just as importantly- a simple celebration of beautiful forms found in this world.
I usually work on a group of pieces concurrently, and complete them at the same time. I prefer direct carving- searching for forms under the skin of the stone’s surface. I am fascinated with the fluid nature of a piece of stone. I don’t impose an idea on the medium, but rather look for possibilities inherent within it. I respect the stone itself, not changing it unless I feel the idea is worth sacrificing the natural form- which is already beautiful and timeless. I feel a sculpture’s permanence dictates restraint from its makers.
Mixed media pieces, usually incorporating boxes, are a rich source of communication. For me, they are a form of poetry- unique in their capability for expression of mood and subtle message. My mixed media works range from playful peeping frogs to pieces dealing with hidden beauty, lost freedom, and celebrating aspects of motherhood.
However, I am my happiest drawing attention to some simple beauty I have chosen to linger on, and explore its form. I work towards a simple elegance, linking the form to the medium most suited to it, and retaining the natural character of the subject.
