Approaching their final semesters of college
at URI, these 14 students explore diverse mediums, while beginning
to develop conceptual interests as emerging artists. These concepts
and interests range from approaches in figurative representation,
to depiction of the urban culture of Providence, to representing
the seven deadly sins through mixed media graphics. Referencing
the work of cubist, abstract, expressionist and post-modern
painters and printmakers, students test their own creative waters.

Painting student, Isis Brighton plays around
with an adapted painting style reminiscent of works by cultural
icon and conceptual artist Andy Warhol. Using an intensely saturated
palette of punchy greens, and candy-sweet pinks, Brighton paints
subjects including various self-portraits with flat color and
an attitude of unaffected cool.
Fellow painting student Michael
Harrington embraces an opposite approach to the figure, filling
large canvases with heavy texture and brushstrokes wrought
with emotion. Clearly inspired by the work of the abstract expressionists
of the early-mid 20 th century, Harrington presents works
older than his college years.
Providence native, George Cifuentes
combines his love for the city with an interest in urban costume
and dress through his textile designs and prints. He hopes
to develop this body of work into a line of urban clothing.
Fellow
student, David Flam, working in the typically urban genre
of comics and zines, presents billboard-sized images with an
emphasis on computer-generated graphics. Inspired by the work
of comic artists such as Jeff Lindsey and Frank Miller, Flam
works on creating a world of stylized characters.
With each
of these 14 students pursuing a different and exciting direction
in the field of art, Hera is pleased to exhibit the work of
these emerging artists. |
