Join us for Artists' Talks by Newport sculptor
Natasha Harrison, Newport painter Daniel Powell, and Providence painter
Duane Slick on Saturday, December 3, 2 - 3 pm.
|
"Forces at Work: Art and Spirit" features
the work of fifteen artists working in painting, photography, printmaking,
site-specific installation, and sculpture chosen by Ms. Farnell
for their use of spiritually evocative imagery, media, and technique.
The works on display are contemporary artistic expressions of spiritual
feeling, apprehended through beautiful, sublime, and even whimsical
imagery.
This exhibition is supported by The Rhode Island State Council
on the Arts, The Friends of Hera, and the Hera Foundation.

About the Artists
|
|
The artists participating in "Forces at
Work: Art and Spirit" are
a diverse and distinctive group and their work reflects
a variety of approaches.
Sheryl Maree Reily's
arrangement of oversized rosaries and Andra Samelson
paintings of the destroyed Bamiyan, Afghanistan Buddhas are influenced
by and directly refer to a specific religious faith and spiritual practice.
Installation artist Miruna Dragan and painter
Janet Gorzegno borrow
scientific diagrams and reinterpret traditional patterns, shapes and colors of religious,
mythological and mystical iconography.
Painters Daniel Powell
and Amy Borezo engage in
a contemporary dialogue with the New England tradition of transcendental landscape.
The work of self-taught
artists Lonnie Holley,
Purvis Young and
Mose Tolliver
is informed by a strong spiritual tradition of church
and community.
Diverse and engaging, "Forces at Work: Art and Spirit" is
a welcome opportunity to contemplate and celebrate image, art
and spirit. |
