Saturday, February 1 -Saturday, March 1, 2003
Opening Reception for Young Adults: Friday, January 31, 7-9 PM
Awards Ceremony: 8 PM
Opening Reception for Children: Saturday, February 1, 10 AM-12 PM

-Wakefield, RI- Hera Gallery starts the new year with its most popular exhibition, the venerable 19th Annual Children's Exhibition and 17th Annual Young Adults' Exhibition, from February 1-March 1, 2003. This year's exhibition is once again partially sponsored by a generous donation from The Washington Trust Company. Additional funding for this exhibition was provided by the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts.

William Leete, Professor Emeritus from University of Rhode Island's Art Department, selected prize-winning artworks in categories such as "Best Drawing," "Best Sculpture," and "Best Photograph." Pictured below is a First Prize winning painting by Morgan Bozarth of South Kingstown High School.

State Senator Susan Soznowski presented awards at an 8 PM ceremony during the opening reception on Friday, January 31. Soznowski also awarded Senate Citations to the winning students. Exhibition Coordinator and printmaker Mariclare McKnight lead a silk screen workshop at the opening for the elementary students on Saturday, February 1, from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Hera invited all Rhode Island high school, middle school, and elementary school students to participate in this event, which augments local art education programs and allows students to present their artworks in a professional gallery setting.

"Typically, more than 250 artworks are displayed. In recent years, however, we have been receiving many more pieces as the word about this exhibition has spread. This year, we received an overwhelming response, with approximately 430 artworks submitted from 32 schools, from South Kingstown to Tiverton to East Providence," says Director Katherine Veneman.

"Our exhibition follows on the heels of the prestigious Scholastic Arts competition, so teachers are prepared. Another reason for the increased popularity could also be the convenience afforded by our website-many more teachers and students have been viewing the site because it now has exhibitor guidelines and pictures from last years' show," she adds.

Announcement Card Competition Winner
We are also proud to announce the winner of our second annual Announcement Card Competition open to secondary school students only. Printmaker Barbara Pagh, a Professor of Art at University of Rhode Island, selected a digital print by Tiverton High School senior Troy Cabral. The winning image, at right, was reproduced on 2000 professional quality announcement cards and distributed to students, community members, artists, and art institutions. Cabral's teacher, Gerry Feldman, also submitted the works of 21 young artists to the show. She says,

"My biggest goal in teaching art is to connect students to art that's in the outside world, not just the classroom. Making art represents a way of taking students to a place where words don't go-they learn to understand spatial relations, abstraction, and to express feelings that don't have verbal articulation.

The arts are vital, not for a few elite students. Our arts program represents a cross- section of students, and should be considered a core for most students. The biggest thing that they get from making art is a sense that they are on their learning continuum, they are on a journey, they are working and learning-it's a process of immersion. The arts are vital, a big piece of our lives, and it feels very real to them."
