Concept: Water is the medium of life.
We are born from water and remain mostly water until we return to dust. Water in dynamic cyclic flow forms 70% of the earth’s surface creating interconnected patterns of life in scaled interrelationships.

Civilizations have flourished and evolved by harnessing the flow of water. Water has been essential for economic growth and has become a playground for fun and adventure. We are inspired by the beauty and sublime nature of water.

These days, contemporary water issues are creating debates over conflicting interests at local and global levels.
Concerns over enough clean drinking water, rising sea levels, powerful storms or droughts spurred by what most believe are climate change forces, fracking and energy needs, and transnational controls of water rights are just some of our worries.

This national juried exhibition at Hera Gallery seeks a varied perspective on contemporary views of water as an essential element. Political, social, environmental and aesthetic themes related to water in all media will be considered.

Application Deadline: Friday, February 6th, 2015.

Self Portraits: Under My Skin

"Hera Gallery is pleased to feature the exhibition“Self Portraits: Under My Skin”, photographs by Amanda Swain Bingham, on display from June 21st until July 19th, 2014.

Of this body of photographic work, Amanda states, “For the past four years I have been working on a series of self-portraits using shadow and reflection. I like to think of these photographs as drawings. Both mediums speak to my need to depict and record. I deliberately improvise and arrange. I want my shadows and reflections to roam in unselfconscious form. They venture under my skin and explore my vulnerability, disengaged from our cultural obsession with identity and beauty. I get to redefine what I am made of, and water is my mirror."

Exhibition Dates: June 21st - July 19th
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 21st, 6-8pm

Old World

"Hera Gallery is pleased to feature the exhibition“Old World”, photographs by Viera Levitt, on display from June 21st until July 19th, 2014.
“Old World” presents photographs taken during several trips to a once vibrant, now abandoned sugar mill in Trnava, Slovakia. This important landmark was built in 1868 but was forced to close down in 2004, a victim of capitalism's economic reality.

Privatized and repeatedly imagined as cultural and/or commercial space, the mill continues to sit, unused and decaying near the historical center of this walled city. Huge dystopian spaces and ghosts of everyday use allow this former beet sugar factory to be the perfect subject for Viera's large format digital photographs."

Exhibition Dates: June 21st - July 19th
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 21st, 6-8pm

Hera Gallery is pleased to present The Business of Art!, a workshop on tax and business basics for working artists and designers, presented by Rich Streitfeld, CPA . Rich is a a partner at Aaronson, Lavoie Streitfeld Diaz and Co., with broad expertise and a large clientele of an international scale. His own clientele includes medical practices to dance companies; start-up health care providers to real estate entrepreneurs. He loves working with businesses, entrepreneurs and artists. Rich developed the state’s first same-sex planning seminar and leads business workshops for artists.

Hera Gallery is pleased to feature the exhibition “Imagined Landscapes” by Roberta Richman on view from August 31 to October 5, 2013. Opening reception: Saturday, Sept 7th, 6 to 8pm

As Richman states, “Landscape has inspired my work for as long as I can remember. Looking at horizons, fields, marshland, dunes and beginning new work with a particular place in mind is how I have always moved from a white sheet of paper to the first of many stages of the original image. My affinity to natural landscape has not changed but over time my expression of it has. This show includes two distinct groups of work that are obviously different.

Hera Gallery is pleased to feature the exhibition "Haiku", by Jeannette Jacobs on view from August 31 to October 5, 2013.
Opening reception: Saturday, Sept 7th, 6 to 8pm

Jeannette Jacobs has made over 100 originally designed quilts and enjoys the process immensely. As Jacobs states, “When I work on a quilt, I put away all thoughts that are not helpful and direct my energies towards relaxing and focusing. I work intuitively. I begin to see shapes in my head and think about how to cut them out of the huge palette of colors and patterns that I have in my fabrics. I have learned not to think about what others expect or what will sell, but rather I look at my time in my studio as a process of discovery. I love being inside my brain and pushing myself to think in ever more varied ways because I know the ideas are there for the taking. It’s all about being focused and disciplined. Being alone, in my studio allows me to, what I call, be in the zone.”

These photographs explore what a garden is and what the garden has meant at various times in history, how societies relate to and live in nature. They reflect the ways people bring plant life and the act of growing things into their lives for survival and pleasure, for food and for spiritual and creative expression.”

: Repeat Repeat
April 6th  – May 4th; Opening Reception: Saturday, April 6th, 6 –8 pm
“Repeat Repeat” is a conceptual installation of sculpture, painting, and drawing that explores the repeating moves made by an artist.
Responding to the geometric patterns in movement, culture and environmental systems, Yefko is drawn to the repeating rhythms of life in all its complexities. For Yefko, repeating marks, shapes, and color act as metaphors for breath, recovery, desire, and cultural patterns. “Repeating oneself is as essential as breathing,” says Yefko.

Barbara Pagh: Coast to Coast
Opening Reception, Saturday, September 8th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm
Exhibition Dates: September 8th – October 13th

In this exhibition, Barbara Pagh will bring together a selection of work from several related series of prints. Landscape has been a dominant theme in her work for the past twenty years. There is no attempt to create a realistic representation of place, but a subjective impression based on structure and color and resulting in a layering of texture and form. Pagh often incorporates images of close textural details and natural objects. Although taken from a photograph, the resulting abstraction encourages the viewer to look at the landscape in a new way. More info in our blog.
Myron Rubenstein: Figures In-taglio+
Opening Reception, Saturday, September 8th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Exhibition Dates: September 8th – October 13th

Myron previously worked as a graphic designer, and created art for years with traditional media, with a focus on canvas, oil and mixed media. Over the last few years he has embraced his digital skills, searching for the convergence of traditional painting, photography and the virtual world of computing. Incorporating today's technology with traditional painting on canvas has led to a very personal form of computer generated art. More info in our blog.

Our new home, 10 High Street, Wakefield, RI is still in the process of being renovated to become a gallery space. In order to present our exhibitions properly we needed to install LED track lighting, signage and other improvements to make the space Hera Gallery. To help with these costs, Hera has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to best showcase our summer exhibitions in our new space.

With your help, this one time cost will help us continue to bring challenging artwork, exhibitions, and events to southern Rhode Island.  Here is the link to our project, Hera Gallery Heats Up with Summer Art.

Beauty in the Beast: Photography of Brutalist Architecture
Please join artists Viera Levitt and Elizabeth Lind for 'Tea at 5' at Hera Gallery on Thursday, August 30th from 5 to 8 p.m. for a cup of tea and an informal talk about their work.
Through her photographic exploration of a style of architecture often seen as soulless and austere, Viera Levitt provides us with a new lens to discover its hidden beauty. Viera's photographs have been able to capture abstract and geometric sculptural forms, elegant details and even harmony in these architectural "elephants" through her clean artistic style that "listens" for echoes of the architecture's grandiose and utopian vision. Supported in part by RISCA's Project Grant. For more information and slideshow please visit www.facebook.com/events/394604067254171 or http://youtu.be/lpfg0NcGsvU

Elizabeth Lind

Figs, Figures & Other Mysteries
Please join artists Viera Levitt and Elizabeth Lind for 'Tea at 5' at Hera Gallery on Thursday, August 30th from 5 to 8 p.m. for a cup of tea and an informal talk about their work.
Elizabeth Lind speaks through the language of symbols, creating sculptures of women, evocative environments, and natural objects that allude to deeper meanings within the work. Employing direct carving techniques and using the tools and materials of thousands of years ago, her work explores the fluid nature of shifting forms under the stone's surface. Read more or comment: https://www.facebook.com/events/394604067254171/

May 1 –July 31: John Kotula, Ten Most Wanted
August 1 – August 6: Sue VanNess
For the next couple of years, Hera Gallery and Hera Educational Foundation is going to be without a permanent exhibition space. Due to development of the property, we have had to say goodbye to our building of more than thirty years on Main Street in Wakefield. When construction is completed, we hope to return to this location. While two years without a home is a significant loss, we also view it as a great opportunity to try new things. Our partnership with Bagelz of Wakefield to show the art of Hera Members in the Meeting Room Gallery is one such undertaking.
