APPOINTMENT OF ISLAY TAYLOR AS GALLERY DIRECTOR

Hera Gallery announces the appointment of Islay Taylor to the position of Gallery Director. A recent Master of Fine Arts graduate of the Jewelry and Metalsmithing program at the Rhode Island School of Design, Islay is an accomplished artist working primarily within the format of adornment. Prior to attending RISD, Islay received her Bachelor degree from Alfred University in New York where she double majored in sculpture and printmaking with a minor in Art History. Her work has received numerous accreditations and awards, and has been shown locally as well as internationally. Her work is soon to be featured at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Connecticut, as well as at the Marzee Gallery in The Netherlands.

Although she currently lives in Providence, Islay has spent a majority of her creative career locally. Having grown up in South Kingstown, she was active in the local art scene during high school, and also returned post-college to participate in a local artist collaborative at The One Way Gallery in Narragansett.

Islay is excited to work in conjunction with Hera Gallery’s high standards and to utilize her role as Gallery Director to bring educational and thought provoking work to our community.

HERA GALLERY AT ONE CAPITOL HILL
ATRIUM GALLERY
One Capital Hill

atrium

Hera Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming show, Hera at One Capitol Hill, hosted by the Atrium Gallery. This show features the work of Hera Gallery members Alexandra Broches, Linda Denosky-Smart, Jeannette Jacobs, John Kotula, Jill McLaughlin, Maureen Murray, Barbara Pagh, Roberta Richman, and Myron Rubenstein. The artists of Hera Gallery represent an identity of dedicated, passionate, contemporary artists located within our community.

Hera at One Capitol Hill will offer a unique opportunity for Hera Gallery artists to be represented together in a conglomerate environment. The artists that are affiliated with the Hera Gallery are as unique and varied as the artwork that they create. Photography, printmaking, painting, and mixed media works on paper will come together to create a synchronicity of artworks referencing the individual artists and the ideals that Hera Gallery has been founded on. This exhibition will also give Hera Gallery members a specific opportunity to present their explorations in contemporary cultural, social, and aesthetic issues to a new audience.

Located at 327 Main Street in Wakefield, Hera Gallery was founded in 1974 and has been a pioneer in the genesis of artist-run exhibitions spaces. Originally conceptualized as a venue for women artists, often under-represented at the time in commercial galleries, Hera has broadened its mission to include the work of regionally and nationally recognized artists of both genders who are at all stage of their careers. Today, Hera is the place to go to see innovative contemporary art in Rhode Island. Hera features eleven months of programming, with gallery artist exhibitions as well as topical exhibitions featuring outside artists. Hera’s programs have expanded to include open mic and spoken word evenings, concerts, performance, film presentations and programming by local high school students. Hera’s programs continue to gain support of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the Rhode Island Foundation and the local community.

The Atrium Gallery is a project of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the Rhode Island Department of Administration. The Atrium Gallery is located at One Capitol Hill in the first floor lobby of the William E. Powers Administration Building on Smith Street in Providence, across from the Rhode Island State House. These programs are presented with partial support from The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Hera Educational Foundation, and The Friends of Hera.
